Icon painted (written) using old traditional techniques:

  • gilded with golden leaves 23.75 karat
  • painted on gesso a number of substrates made from a traditional mix of an animal glue binder and chalk
  • painted in egg tempera technique
  • traditionally painted on a lime wood
  • provided with tapered and dove-tailed battens inserted into the back
    (like icons from the 12th to 15th centuries)
  • icon covered with amber shellac and varnish

Madonna Eleusa or Virgin of Tenderness - types of iconographic depictions of Mary an Jesus Christ showing great mother's affection to the child snuggling up to his mother's cheek.

Such icons have been venerated in the Eastern Church for centuries.
Similar types of depictions are also found in Madonna paintings in the Western Church where they are called the Madonna Eleusa or Virgin of Tenderness.
